The car has been the most reliable I've ever owned. Faults: Intake manifold split, replaced computer, normal maintenance. It seems as if I was just driving the 25th Anniversary model. The first one has 140,000 miles on it and still has like-new performance without using a drop of oil! This car had numerous improvements over that model, dual airbags, 4 wheel disc, structural improvements. The Cougar is a two-door coupe, which, if you haven't been paying attention over the past 30 years, is what it has been primarily over that time. Just about everything electrical in that car is completely goofy. Excellent blend of sporting-spirit and poised luxury. Cougar has become the vehicle it has become because of its styling. And while it was a good car competing against the Mustang, it has become a truly elegant car living on the T'bird's platform.

Transmission is tempermental, shudders in between shifts- randomly. This former Mustang clone had a platform change in mid-life and is now a Thunderbird clone. Interior-like new condition, new tires, new brakes, 1 owner. Driver's side power window has never opened. There were some flirtations with four doors and a station wagon for a short spell, but the Cougar has been a luxury coupe for most of its life. The engine is relatively quiet. I kinda wish I had the V8 but glad I don't because of the gas prices.
Check engine soon light has been coming on, so I have checked spark plugs etc. General Comments: The car rides wonderful; It is able to glide down the highway and then handle itself well on back roads. I know I didn't buy a new vehicle and there was going to be some problems, but this is nuts. The '97 Cougar I just bought is my second one. It was a sad day to see the great Cougars fade into history.
To round out the package you get a sport-tuned suspension and close ratio steering. Faults: Brakes are annoying they make noise at certain speeds when you slow down. Traction-assist somewhat helpful on snow and ice. Performance of the Cougar was excellent. Ditto Cougar, Escort and Mustang. Disconnected the battery, but no difference.

Biggest complaint, decontenting to pay for new standard items, ant-slip etc. I would have expected it to be much tighter than it was. But still the Cougar is a very nice car. It's common that if a sensor fails, the computer can reset to default values, prompting your check engine light to come on and also resulting in dramatic loss of performance and mileage.
